Amplified Bible (AMP)
Behold, these caused the Israelites by the counsel of Balaam to trespass and act treacherously against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and so a [smiting] plague came among the congregation of the Lord.
Previously, I had questioned about why God was so hard on Balaam. Numbers 31:16 states clearly the sin of Balaam.
“Behold, these caused the Israelites by the counsel of Balaam to trespass and act treacherously against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and so a [smiting] plague came among the congregation of the Lord.”
That’s a serious charge, counseling others to purposely cause a people group to sin!
As far a chapter 31 as a whole, while reading it, I found myself thinking about the seriousness of sin and how God desires us to “kill” anything inducing sin, even something that would potentially cause sin. By “kill,” I mean cut it out of our lives. This may be emotionally traumatic, but if we desire to wholly follow the Lord, we must allow His Spirit to show us these areas in our lives, then receive His power to “kill” it.
